Four days at Grandmother Lane's
After meeting with the attorney in Birmingham, we drove to east Alabama. Grandmother Lane (Nathan's mom's mom) welcomed us into her home for the week while we waited for ICPC (interstate) clearance to take Hannah home.
It was such a relief to relax in a home, not be on the road, and not eat in restaurants! Grandmother made her home ours and we loved the time with her. Nathan's parents visited us twice during the week (since their home in Georgia is only an hour from Grandmother's just across the Alabama border) and Grandmother Garner came the first night too.
And Thursday evening, we got the call - clearance from both states! So, after packing up and one more visit Friday, we made the trek home. The four-and-a-half hour drive took us seven. . . guess I'd forgotten how long (and how many) stops are with a baby too! So happy to arrive home Friday evening!

Words of wisdom
+039.jpg)
Being a helpful big sister, Abigail decided to share some of her great wisdom with her new baby sister. Hannah didn't always enjoy our road trips between points in Alabama. One day (Sunday or Monday) she was protesting confinement in her car seat and Abigail did all she could to console her - assurances that she was okay, shushing, asking Mommy to try the pacifier again, and singing Jesus Loves Me at the top of her lungs. All to no avail. Finally, she delivered the ultimatum. We heard, "Now Hannah, you have two choices. You can be quiet. . . and Jesus Loves You" (not delivered as a choice at all). Guess she's been listening. Sort of.

Amy and Anna
Sunday evening we met and ate supper at Santa Fe with Julia's long time "Alabama friends" Amy and Anna. We had such fun catching up and were delighted to introduce our new daughter to them. (Funny thing, they - and Amy's sister Bonnie - were the first people we met the day we were engaged nearly seven years ago!)

Hannah's "Gotcha Day"
Sorry for the lack of posts this past week - life has been busy! We were happy to return home last Friday (after waiting a week in Alabama for interstate paperwork clearances). The next day we welcomed family (Julia's side hadn't met Hannah yet!) and Sunday we celebrated Charlotte's 23rd birthday. And then the first couple of days of adjustment (and mountains of laundry!) with Nathan back at work. . . I'll try to catch up. We do have LOTS of pictures from the past ten days. =)
Let's back up. . . to Hannah's Gotcha Day. Though we had no idea until a few days before, our loving Father has always known he would add sweet Hannah to our family on February 7, 2009! After Hannah's two days in the hospital following birth, she spent a week with a private foster family in Alabama waiting for her "forever family." (Alabama has a five day period where the birthmother can change her mind following signing consents and so Angel Adoptions doesn't place babies with adoptive families until that time has expired.)
Saturday morning a week and a half ago we left our Alabama hotel very eagerly and drove to the Bartletts' home to meet and receive Hannah. Guess I told that story below. . . So, here are the pictures!

Tuesday pics of Hannah

Hannah loves her pacifier! And she can strike some pretty dramatic poses (and put on a convincing act that diaper changes are cruel and unusual punishment).
We're grateful to be able to spend the next few days (while waiting for ICPC clearance to leave the state) with Nathan's grandmother. Homes and family are so much nicer than hotels - especially for life with little ones!

We're together!!!
Hannah Elisabeth
Born January 29, 2009
6 lbs. 8 oz.
Joined her "forever family" February 7, 2009 (9 days old)

O magnify the Lord with us and let us exalt his Name together! The Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with joy!
This morning at 10:05 we met our new little daughter Hannah Elisabeth! My heart nearly overflowed (and my eyes did) as I held her for the first time. And seeing Nathan and Abigail with her was absolutely precious. We spent the next two and a half hours (while holding Hannah of course!) visiting with the family who has cared for Hannah the past seven days and with the director of Angel Adoptions. Then we drove east to our hotel and have enjoyed the afternoon and evening together. Lots of details to share another time - time to attempt sleep!
Oh, we took lots of pictures on the camera and planned to share them, but my SD card doesn't fit into this laptop - and I failed to bring the USB converter - so these e-mailed from the cell phone will have to do for now.

Thank you to those of you who have prayed with us with us throughout this day as well as the days and months preceding!

Baby news!!!
Lord willing, a one-week-old baby girl in Alabama will be our daughter in two days!
After paperwork arrives by Fed-Ex tomorrow morning, we plan to have fingerprints done and some things notarized and then we’ll be on our way. The placement (meaning: baby in our arms!) is scheduled for Saturday late morning. Thank you so much for praying with us – please continue!
We’ll post an announcement and pictures as soon as we can.

A family just ahead of us
This video clip left Nathan teary and me weeping. I think you'll understand why. It's overwhelming to consider the (horizontal) implications for a family and the(vertical) implications of God rescuing and adopting us. As Jason Kovacs said, "In it you can catch a glimpse of Zach and Kim’s heart to make much of Christ in adoption and in their lives as they live out the Gospel."

Glorifying the Father of the Fatherless
Nathan and I read this post from DesiringGod.org last summer as God was moving our hearts toward adoption. The author, Jason Kovacs, has been an encouragement to us through his writing and as part of the Together for Adoption conference we attended in November (where we got to speak with him for about half an hour). Please read this portion of his story which ends, "The question will never be whether you should care for orphans. The question is how you will care for them and in doing so reflect the compassion of God for the least of these."

Our Christmas letter
Well, I'll be back later with pictures from Mom's 60th birthday celebration and then Abigail's 3rd birthday. . . Merry Christmas!

Dear family and friends,
“When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Galatians 4:4-6). God is building his family (and he’s been planning to do so since before the creation of the world—see Romans 8:15-17, 22-23 and Ephesians 1:3-6)!
We’ve long celebrated Jesus’ birth as a part of God’s plan to redeem mankind. But Christmas has become even dearer to us this year as we’ve pondered the truth that Jesus came so that we could be adopted as God’s sons. We were once alienated from Christ by our sin, strangers to God’s promises and without hope, but God reached across all barriers and drew us into His family! And now, we are heirs together with the Son of God. Amazing!
Nathan is now in his seventh year of full-time work at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. We’re thankful that while he continues balancing varying job responsibilities, he has more help this year and thus his hours are more regular (especially helpful with a class schedule to juggle too!). Nathan just completed one of his more enjoyable semesters taking Economics and Human Resource Management and is headed into two of his last five classes this spring.
Julia continues to keep the children of friends in our home a few days a week. This fall we’ve cared for two baby boys as well as for preschoolers (not all on the same day!) and so Julia and Abigail have both had opportunity to practice their infant skills.
We still enjoy teaching the second graders at Heritage Bible Church. Each class of seven and eight year olds is full of such fun (and different) personalities . . . They prevent any hour from becoming routine! We delight to teach them of the God who made them, loves them, and seeks to redeem them from the curse of the fall. . . that He might display his greatness and worth to all the world.
Our little girl turned three last week and thinks she’s nearly grown. Abigail is an energetic chatterbox (with an incredible vocabulary) and keeps us hopping too. Though she loves helping Mommy and Daddy and enjoys all of her toys, you’ll most often find Abigail caring for her baby dolls. Some days she’s their mommy, some days their babysitter, and some days their big sister. But she’s forever rocking, bouncing, feeding, kissing, instructing, washing or changing her babies.
Since Abigail was 21 months old (about the time she gained the skill of using words to communicate!), she’s been asking God to add a baby to our family (as she’s watched him give babies to many other families). We are thrilled to share with you that God is answering her prayer and ours. God led us on a painful journey called “secondary infertility,” and now we rejoice in His leading us to add to our family through adoption! Even during engagement we discussed our desire to adopt, but considered the possibility to be several years out. Now we believe that God has been working to change our time table to align with His.
We plan to adopt a newborn domestically. Our homestudy is complete and we pray and wait to learn what child the Lord has for us. God has worked much in our hearts through this process. Nathan has expressed his excitement at the opportunity to learn and try to model God’s relationship with His people as the adoptive father of a transracial family. Will you pray for all of us?
You can watch for the baby announcement and keep up with pictures and news of our family at our blog nathanjuliagarner.blogspot.com. Enjoy celebrating Christ this season!
With love,
Nathan, Julia, & Abigail Garner

Together for Adoption 2008
In the meantime. . . between pictures on the last several posts, God was doing much in our family. Actually, bringing life to desires He'd given a good while back. We've been talking and praying for months (seriously anyway, casually for years) about adopting a baby. As the Lord opened doors to pursue adoption and united our hearts, He also gave us the opportunity to attend an incredible conference - Together for Adoption - on November 1. So Abigail spent that Saturday with friends and Nathan and I listened, absorbed, and worshiped the God who has adopted us. If you're interested at all, check out the links below. The sessions are available for free download and would bless you - whether or not you're personally interested in adoption. I especially recommend the sessions by Phillips (“The Good News of Adoption“) and Robbins (“Adoption and the Multi-Ethnic Family of God“).
